Named in honour of Philippe Foucher, one of the ancestral figures behind the La Luandière story, this Syrah is a wine of structure, dignity, and old-world restraint. Grown on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, it reflects warm Paarl days, cooling mountain breezes, and the granite-rooted depth of the farm.
Philippe Foucher is crafted for longevity. Whole-cluster fermentation brings perfume, spice, and fine-boned structure, while French oak maturation lends polish and quiet power. It is a Syrah made not for immediate sweetness or softness, but for unfolding — gaining savoury complexity, earthy depth and aromatic grace with time in the bottle.
Tasting Note
Deep ruby with a dark, youthful core. Aromas of blackberry, mulberry, violet, cracked black pepper, and dried herbs rise from the glass, followed by subtle notes of smoked meat, olive tapenade, and spice. The palate is concentrated yet refined, with dark fruit, firm tannins, and a savoury mineral line. The finish is long, lifted, and quietly commanding.
The Syrah comes from mountain-facing slopes where sunlight, wind, and soil combine to build concentration without heaviness. Traditional whole-cluster fermentation allows stems, skins, and fruit to work together, giving the wine aromatic lift, structure, and a naturally savoury edge. French oak supports the wine without masking its origin.
Philippe Foucher is our expression of strength held in balance. It carries the warmth of Paarl, but also the discipline of mountain air. The wine is deliberately made to age — to move from youthful dark fruit and pepper toward leather, spice, dried herbs, and deeper earth tones. Its beauty lies in patience.

Wines are made not only for the moment of drinking, but for patience, memory, and time.
At La Luandière, the wines are made with an old-world understanding of time. They are not rushed into early charm or shaped for immediate applause. Each wine is allowed to carry the rhythm of the farm: the warmth of Paarl, the cooling breath from the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, the quiet strength of the soils, and the patience of traditional cellar work.
Our winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention, careful extraction, and long maturation. Fermentation is handled gently, with respect for the fruit and the natural structure of each cultivar. The wines are matured in French oak for approximately twelve months, then given further time in bottle before release. This extended ageing allows the wines to settle, integrate, and reveal themselves slowly.
These are wines made to age — not simply to survive time, but to become more complete through it. With patience, the fruit softens, the tannins become finer, the oak folds into the wine, and the deeper notes of earth, spice, dried herbs, tobacco, honey, beeswax, and mineral texture begin to emerge.
Philippe Foucher comes from Syrah grown on the slopes of the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, where warm days are tempered by cooling mountain breezes. The sandy clay loam soils provide structure and concentration, while the elevation and airflow help preserve aromatic lift and freshness.
This is a site that gives Syrah both strength and restraint. Paarl provides dark fruit, ripeness, and depth, but the mountain influence prevents the wine from becoming heavy. The result is a Syrah with intensity, perfume, and a firm but elegant frame.
The nose shows blackberry, dark plum, mulberry, violet, cracked black pepper, dried rosemary, fynbos, and subtle smoked meat. There are also darker undertones of graphite, clove, leather, olive tapenade, and charred spice, especially as the wine opens in the glass. The palate is layered and savoury, with dark fruit, firm but polished tannins, and a long, spicy finish.
Traditional fermentation and minimal intervention allow the Syrah to hold onto its natural shape. Whole-cluster influence brings perfume, spice, and structure, while French oak maturation adds polish without overwhelming the fruit. The wine is made to carry both fruit and tannin, both richness and tension — essential elements for graceful ageing.
In its youth, Philippe Fouchée is expressive and aromatic, showing dark berries, pepper, and violet. Over time, the fruit will move into more complex notes of dried black cherry, cured meat, leather, tobacco, black olive, forest floor, and warm spice. The tannins will soften and lengthen, and the savoury character will become more pronounced.
This is a wine for those who enjoy watching a bottle evolve. It has the structure to age, but also the soul to become more interesting, more layered, and more quietly powerful with time.
